The original timber sash windows were used in houses from around the late 1700’s to 1950; they were widely used in Victorian houses where a combination of pulleys weights and springs allowed you to operate the window. The sash window design was aesthetically pleasing to the eye and was very practical as it allowed for excellent ventilation whilst maintaining simplicity for ease of cleaning both inside and outside the window. However the old timber sash windows were very draughty and not great heat insulators.
